St. Vincent's Music Ministry
Liturgy   >   Music Ministry

St. Vincent's Music Ministry worships year round, typically involving over 100 volunteer musicians.  A variety of musicians assist our worshippers in song at all seven weekend Masses. Mr. Daryel Nance is our Parish Music Diector and can be contaced at (713) 663-3539 (Music Office) or e-mail: dnance@svdp-edu.org

When one joins one of the music ministry ensembles at St. Vincent's, they find themselves welcomed as the newest addition into a musical family with a long tradition of service to the parish.  We have many opportunities for both vocalists and instrumentalists to add their talents to our worship.  All we ask of a beginning vocalist is the ability to consistently "match pitch" with the others in your same voice section.  You will learn much of what you need to know as you invest your time rehearsing and singing for Mass.

Admittedly music ministry will make demands on your time.  You will enjoy learning alongside singers who may also be beginners, or who may be experienced volunteers, or who may have had the benefit of extensive training.  At St. Vincent's we try very hard to find a place for everyone who feels motivated to participate in music ministry.

Saturday 5 p.m.       Vocal Ensemble and Cantor with Organ (or Piano) accompaniment - The 5 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass Music Ministry is a small ensemble of varying composition, that typically can include vocalists and instrumentalists, supported by organ or keyboard.  Most of the musicians in this ensemble are also involved in one or more Sunday music ensembles at St.Vincent's. They warm up at 4:30 p.m. before Mass on Saturday and rehearse at the 7:30 p.m. Thursday inter-ensmeble rehearsal.

Sunday 9 a.m.           Vocal Ensemble with "acoustic" Guitars (4), Bass, Flute, Violin, and Piano accompaniment - The 9 a.m. Sunday Mass Music Ministry  is a contemporary worship ensemble instrumentally supported by guitar, bass, keyboard and vartious other instruments.  These musicians rehearse on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. before Mass, after Mass until 10:30 a.m., and rehearse at the 7:30 p.m. Thursday inter-ensmeble rehearsal.

Sunday 11 a.m.         Parish Choral Ensemble with Organ (or Piano), Flute, String, and Brass instruments as available. The 11 a.m. Choral ensemble forms the core for singers from all ensembles to join with, for the major seasonal parish celebrations of the Liturgy.  In addition to supporting congregational singing, these singers also perform choral repertoire, with some emphasis on acappella works.  Their choral repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant and choral works spaning various periods of  history, to contemporary choral worship music.  A variety of musical instruments are often used, supported by the pipe organ or other keyboard instruments, to provide the instrumental acompaniment for this Mass.  Their main rehearsal is Thursday evening inter-ensemble rehearsal from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and rehearse on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. before Mass.

Sunday 1 p.m.           Vocal Ensemble with Organ (or Piano) and String instruments as available. The 1 p.m. Sunday Mass Music Ministry are both adult and youth vocalists and instrumentalists.  The 1 p.m. singers and instrumentalists rehearse before Mass at 12:30 p.m., and are welcome at the 7:30 p.m. Thursday inter-ensmeble rehearsal.

For information on the Life Teen Music Ministry, or the many Life Teen youth activities, visit St.Vincent's Youth Ministry page on this website.

Sunday 7:30 p.m.      Taizé Night Prayer is sung on the First Sunday night of each month. Taizé Night Prayer is sung Night Prayer (Compline) from the Liturgy of the Hours for Sunday night, is sung at 7:30 PM on each 1st Sunday of the month, year round, with the contemplative music of the monastic  community of Taizé in France. People of all faiths are welcome. First Sunday Night Prayer concludes with a candle light procession by all, in the twilight of sunset. For information please contact Daryel Nance: dnance@svdp-edu.org; (713) 663-3539.

The St. Vincent de Paul School Choir  is Directed by Ms. Mary Monks and involves around 35 school students from our school - they sing for school liturgies and perform for various Sunday events throughout the year.

Cantors aid the assembly in their musical worship at all Masses, and our principal pasrish Cantor is Ms. Lauren Nance. Typically the cantors are also members of the specific music ministry ensemble at each Mass.  There are several volunteers within each music ensemble who are trained as cantors to lead congregation.
